Earlier in the week we had a test run for what potentially could happen in the coming months. Hurricane Irene threatened the South Florida coast and much to our delight was steered northward and had very little impact in our area. Or did it?
We received several calls about branches that had broken or trees that had fallen down. One call on Thursday was from a couple that had a palm tree fall on their garage and put a hole in their roof. Can you imagine 20 to 30 mph winds toppling a palm tree? That’s exactly what happened.
Trees to the eye of a novice or inexperienced tree person (unless obviously down right dead) may look fine. Is it upright? Are the leaves and fronds still in tact? Is it somewhat green in color? Well then it must be fine and pose no threat to anyone or anything. This is not always true, as was the case by the call on Thursday.
Just like taking your car for an oil change and getting that “24 point inspection” or going to the doctor for a routine physical, your trees should be inspected especially this time of year. Wind, not only hurricane force wind, will exploit any weakness a tree may have. Therefore, it’s important to know if there is any potential risk and then make an informed decision on how to minimize or eliminate the risk. The final decision does not always require the tree to be removed. This can be very costly and now many communities are requiring residents to replace any tree removed from their property.
So what’s the next step? You can have your trees evaluated by one of our Certified Arborists. They will perform an inspection and provide suggestions. Some of their recommendations may include basic pruning operations (thinning, raising, cleaning, etc.). They may notice nutritional deficiencies that can be addressed and corrected with a proper plant health care program. Valuable trees that are large with extremely heavy limbs can be braced or have cables installed to provide extra strength. Worst case scenario would be if they detected some type of fault that could not be corrected. In that case they would recommend removing the tree and, if necessary, provide suggestions for a replacement that would best fit that particular location.
